None of this week’s lessons really jumped out at me. While I find video production interesting I do not have any interest in doing it as a profession. Video production is great and profitable, but I wouldn’t last a day doing it as a career. I have to be actively working with my hands and getting dirty.   However, I think having some knowledge of video production is a very useful skill as a business man. I have begun to see how useful it can be, but that is not a field I have an interest in doing as a career.  I have interest in starting a YouTube channel about my company showcasing what I do and giving trade tips.  Audio production is the same for me. While I do have some interest in it, I do not want to do it professionally. It is a good skill to have and as a business owner it can be an essential piece to advertising. I do have some minimal experience with sound and I find it quite fun but not interesting enough for me. Even if you don’t need it for your career, it can be an excellent side job or hobby. Both of these things would make great careers and have the potential to produce a decent income. However, these just aren’t the types of jobs I am interested in as a profession.

By far the most interesting one to me this week was lesson 46, social media management. I have some experience with this already as I run an Instagram page and help run a Facebook page for a ministry I am a part of. In addition, there is an Instagram page for my business and my own social media accounts. I love posting content that intrigues and teaches others. I don’t take the responsibility of these accounts lightly. I always do my best to make the point of the post clear but enjoyable to read. Writing posts and replying to interested people is part of the fun for me. However, I know that I couldn’t do this as a living. I need to really believe in the company in order to enjoy it. And doing this as a service to businesses wouldn’t accomplish that. On top of that, it isn’t exciting enough for me. I like working with my hands and getting dirty. Sitting at a desk all day would bore me to death. I could see this being a very profitable business for a young person who can’t get to a place of work. Even if you only do this for a short time, I think it can teach you valuable skills that you could use elsewhere in your career. This course is setting you up to run your own company and every business needs marketing. This is part of that, whether your business is social media management or your just using it for yourself, it’s an important skill to have.

Unlike the last few weeks there was a lesson that stood out to me. It was lesson 44, selling products online. I actually got into this by accident about a year ago; I was able to get a ton of junk for free that had a surprising level of value. I was able to sell all of it on eBay. After seeing how profitable this was I started looking for items I could get for free or at a good deal to sell. I made over $4,000 just by selling stuff on Craigslist and eBay. While I understand, this wasn’t exactly what he was getting at in his lesson, I still think it can be a useful skill to have. I don’t have any intentions to do this as a business, however it is something that can be done on the side, and be very profitable. Done as a career or as a hobby, this can be a very easy way to make cash. Often times people throw goods away that just need to be cleaned up or need minor repairs.

As expressed last week I don’t find any of these opportunities interesting in the intended way. I don’t currently see myself having an official online business. I’m not interested in a 9-5 desk job. I’ve always been more interested in the service jobs. I love working with my hands, getting dirty and being able to clearly see the work I had accomplished at the end of the day. However, I know that as an entrepreneur everything he listed as an opportunity is a valuable resource to have. Whether it’s you personally who has the skill, someone that works for you, or someone you hire. Either way, all these things are essential for a successful company. SEO (search engine optimization) is key in order to have a steady flow of customers find your website. Once they find your website, you need to have it set up user friendly and intriguing. Make it simple to find the information you need people to find first. One of the ways you can do this is graphic design and website development. With a website that is easy to find and user friendly you have increased the odds of your business potential. Copywriting, is the least important to me, although you do need some knowledge of this in order to set up the website correctly. These are great tips for me, but I don’t see these as opportunities.

I didn’t find any of this week’s business opportunities particularly intriguing. However, out of our options,  online business opportunities overview, outsourcing, website development and “rented” websites each of them held a special interest for me. An online business holds no interest for me, but I do realize that having a website is a crucial piece to any business. If you think about it, a website is a small online advertising business for your business. Because of this, online business opportunities held some interest for me. Outsourcing probably held the smallest amount of interest for me. Personally, freelance work has no appeal for me, but it was an interesting lesson! Website development was especially intriguing, but not as a business but as a tool. A crucial part to any company is marketing. Developing a good website can play a huge roll in that. At first hiring a company to make your website can be costly and unneeded. Eventually, as the company grows you can choose to outsource that work. But until then, having some knowledge about web development can be very cost effective! Likewise, rented websites were interesting to me but not exactly in the way he meant. I have personally owned five businesses in my life and I plan to have at least one more if not two. None of them were particularly advertised. I had some business cards and flyers, but I never had a website. All my customers came through word of mouth. At the time a website would have created more business than I could have handled. But now later in life a website is becoming more interesting. For my needs having my own website isn’t really necessary. I think that I could get away with having a rented website pretty easily. In conclusion, I think that most of these business opportunities held more interest for me as a customer than as the provider. However, I found all the lessons to be useful in some way!

Favorite Product-based Company.

It’s hard for me to pick just one. There are a lot of companies that I love and purchase from regularly. I decided on the company I probably spend the most money at– Home Depot. This is definitely one of my top favorite stores. However, if I had money to spend freely it would probably be elsewhere. Home Depot is a fantastic store! Their staff is always kind and ready to lend a hand. They are very knowledgeable about the products they carry. They offer reasonable prices and typically have things in stock.

5-point sales process

Harry Brown makes some great points with his five point sales process. His first point was, get attention! This is great because from the customer’s viewpoint there are tons of options, so why should they pick you? As the salesmen you’re the first part of the company people see. It’s crucial for you to make a great impression. This allows you to set yourself apart from your competitors letting you get your foot in the door. Once you’re in the door you now need to act fast. Identify the problem or need the customer has. At this point the customer has given you their trust and it’s now up to you to impress them. Find the solution you think will solve their problem in the best way. Now that you’ve gotten this far you need to proceed to step three, which is positioning your product of service as the best solution to the customer. But you can’t just stop there. Step four clearly says that you need to prove yourself. Hit home the facts about your solution and why it’s the best fix to their problem. Once you’ve done all this, even if they haven’t said yes yet, ask for the order. This is putting the customer in a position of having to make a decision. This completes the five steps of the sale. It’s now up to your customer what they want to do.
